Jakkar credits five women in his life for giving him the necessary support to accomplish the things he does today: his mother, grandmother, “auntie,” cousin and godmother.
“I was really raised up by women, he said in a recent interview at the Sertoma Centre, a developmental training agency in Alsip where he works. "I love my family, I’m proud of all of my family.”
Today Jakkar, 24, lives in Country Club Hills with his mother, godmother, brother and best friend. This mother/son team is a big fan of each other.
“I’m proud of my mother… my mother graduated in February 2010 and (now) is a counselor,” he said. “She has made it a long way…my mother is my backbone.”
There is a sixth woman who also is making a mark on Jakkar’s life: his fiancé Tyonna. Like other young men of his age, Jakkar dreams of spending the rest of his life with someone special. Fortunately for him, he found her.
“I want to get married and have kids someday,” Jakkar said with a smile. “I am engaged and I am engaged to Tyonna for all the right reasons.” He also noted that the couple would require support at home.
Poetry, rap, church, movies and reading (especially history) are a few of the diverse activities Jakkar enjoys outside his job at the Sertoma Centre. “I really like reading about Rosa Parks, Malcom X, Martin Luther King and Wilma Rudolph,” he said.
He explained his rap name -‘J-Cruise’- is a combination of his first initial coupled with his ability to “cruise around in my wheelchair.”
As for the future? Jakkar talks of advancing from the Sertoma Centre to another job someday.
“I like Sertoma but I know I won’t always be here,” he said, a twinkle of optimistic ambition in his eye.
“I want to help out in the community. I try to inspire [others] to do what’s right... I see myself being in a movie!"
Surely, Jakkar has included the right supporting cast in his life to help him achieve whatever he chooses.
